Whether it’s a quick dash to the shops or a scenic glide through the city, e-scooters and e-bikes are changing how young people in the UK move. Fast, flexible and increasingly popular, these vehicles are more than just a trend. They are becoming part of everyday life.
So what’s really driving the switch to micro-mobility? We asked those who use it most often to find out.
Objective
We set BoltChatAI in motion to explore how commuters are using e-scooters and e-bikes in their daily lives, uncovering how cost, convenience, sustainability and pleasure all shape the way they choose to travel.
Audience & Methodology
We engaged individuals aged 18 to 35 across the United Kingdom who use e-scooters or e-bikes as their main mode of transport. Their real, day-to-day experiences reveal how micro-mobility is woven into routines, values and social lives.
Convenience, Speed and Flexibility as Primary Drivers
For most riders, micro-mobility means freedom. The ability to skip traffic, take shortcuts and move on their own terms stood out across responses.
Many described using scooters or bikes for spontaneous outings, errands or social plans, anything that benefits from a fast and flexible option.
Public transport, by contrast, felt rigid and time-bound. These vehicles offer an on-demand experience that adapts to the user, not the other way around.
Health, Fitness and Environmental Consciousness
There’s more to these rides than just getting from A to B. Riders shared how using e-bikes or scooters made them feel more active and energised. Some even credited the habit with physical improvements like weight loss and better skin, thanks to spending more time outdoors.
Environmental concerns also stood out. Many users see micro-mobility as a greener alternative to cars, helping to reduce their carbon footprint and support sustainable living without sacrificing practicality.
Safety, Reliability and the Role of Infrastructure
Safety remains top of mind. Riders expressed concerns around adverse weather, traffic and battery reliability. For some, a poor experience such as a battery dying mid-trip or unclear parking rules was enough to pause future use.
However, confidence grows when the city infrastructure supports it. Dedicated lanes, well-maintained vehicles and clear rules make for a more predictable and comfortable experience, encouraging continued use
Seamless Tech Integration and Vehicle Condition
App experience matters just as much as the ride itself. Riders want a smooth interface, clear battery information and fast, reliable access. Platforms that make the process intuitive, such as Biike or Lime, are appreciated, especially when paired with clean, ready-to-go vehicles.
When asked what would most attract them to a ride, respondents leaned towards performance over looks. The top-ranked trait was “Smooth ride, no surprises” followed by “Always charged and ready to go.” Reliability, in other words, is the real spark.
